The Government of Papua New Guinea has estimated that 2000 people have been killed and thousands more have been displaced.
At about 3am on Friday 24 May, 2024, a landslide engulfed villages in the Enga Province in Papua New Guinea, totally devastating the area and burying houses under 8 metres of rock and rubble, where an estimated 7000 people slept. At present over 2000 men, women and children have been estimated to have lost their lives.
CARE International PNG is responding to this humanitarian crisis with an initial supply of food, water and basic hygiene. In the recovery phase, CARE will support with shelter, WASH facilities, Protection and Agriculture.
Please give generously to our PNG Landslide Appeal so that we can immediately provide aid and services to those directly displaced and affected.
CARE Australia is working with CARE PNG to deliver aid directly to the people of Enga. Funds raised in this appeal will be used to respond to this humanitarian crisis.
What is the situation in Enga?
Following the landslide highway access near Yambali Village is obstructed, which will likely take considerable time to clear. A nearby bridge in the Western Highlands leading to Enga has also recently collapsed which will hinder assessment and relief efforts. Despite the challenges a team including the Provincial Disaster Center, Department of Health, Police and Defence Forces, have reached the site to further assess the situation. CARE is in contact with the team, and stands ready to support the government-led response as appropriate.
How is CARE placed to help?
CARE has worked in Enga over the years in humanitarian, development and peace-building projects. Such work forms part of CARE’s broader work throughout the highlands region of Papua New Guinea, across natural disaster preparedness and response, health, gender equality and livelihood promotion.
CARE is experienced in implementing a wide range of development projects and relief responses. Often these are in logistically challenging and insecure locations. For instance, CARE was only recently present in Enga, delivering aid to and peacebuilding activities with communities affected by tribal violence. We maintain a hub office inMt Hagen, where it is anticipated that the majority of relief items will be sourced from.
CARE in PNG leads the Highlands Humanitarian Hub. The Hub is the key mechanism for co-ordination in the highlands.
The program support team are highly experienced and competent. The Operations Director and Co-ordinator have been trained internationally and vast experience in implementing in PNG.

Should the funds raised through an emergency appeal exceed the amount required to meet the immediate and longer term needs of the people in the affected areas, or if there are changes in circumstances beyond CARE’s control which limit its ability to utilise all funds in the affected areas, CARE will direct excess funds to other emergency relief activities in the future.
Monthly donation will go to emergency relief & preparedness activities where it is needed most.
